If you’re planning a tropical island holiday, you definitely have scenic white sand beaches with idyllic turquoise waters in mind. You’ll want/NEED ocean view accommodation, sinfully delicious cuisine and opportunities to both relax and explore.
The Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius, The Seychelles and The Maldives are all ideal for the perfect tropical island holiday. However, they are varied and all have their unique qualities. We’re here to help you pick the best tropical island for you!
When you’re in the Maldives, you feel like you’re the only one(s) on the island because every resort, mainly consisting of seductive private villas with private pools and private beach access such as Coco Bodu Hithi (our favorite), are each located on their own private islands.
With fewer visitors spread across over many islands (fewer than 200,000 tourists yearly), The Seychelles promises exclusivity and serenity, as it is famous for its private islands, hidden beaches and beautiful resorts designed for couples, so leave your kids behind ;), but if you insist, resorts such as the amazing Raffles Hotel have kids clubs and numerous child friendly activities.
Mauritius attracts four times the number of annual visitors. There is exclusive accommodation of course (always) but people visit Mauritius mainly for their all-inclusive resorts, exotic live entertainment, 18-hole golf courses and thrilling water activities. Family time? Yes. Tranquility? No. Okay, we are exaggerating, Mauritius is tranquil, what we’re really trying to say is practice your #DiddyCrop because you’re more likely to get “photo bombed” at a beach in Mauritius than in The Seychelles or The Maldives.
VERDICT: The Maldives, The Seychelles
If you’re a water baby/real life mermaid and you enjoy thrilling water activities, you’re going to love Mauritius! Most of their hotels and resorts offer endless water activities. Non-motorized water sports and snorkeling equipment are usually free but you’ll need to pay for other activities such as water skiing, scuba diving, parasailing and jet skiing. Many resorts also have tennis courts, gyms and golf courses, and you can even hire 4x4s and explore the island on your own. Therefore Mauritius is a great place to visit for an activity filled holiday.
On most islands of The Seychelles, all motorized sports are banned due to marine conservation, which means the diving and snorkeling experiences are fantastic. The Inner Islands rest on an easy access shallow plateau and the pristine Outer Islands offer experienced divers barely explored reefs. The Seychelles is also home to world-class big game and salt-water fly-fishing as well as activities such as windsurfing and sailing. There are areas of The Seychelles where you can do motorized water sports but they will most likely be far away from your hotel/resort.
Because the islands of The Maldives are small and otherwise uninhabited, activities are limited to what is offered by the resort and these are largely focused on exploring the ocean. The Maldives offer one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling experiences IN THE WORLD (we only said “one of” to be politically correct) and the vast number of deserted islands in the archipelago make it an attractive place to go island hopping.
VERDICT: Mauritius for a wide range of thrilling land and sea activities and The Maldives for exploring the Indian Ocean.
Whether you’re taking a romantic holiday/ “baecation” just because, or you’re going on your honeymoon or celebrating a special anniversary, romance is what these three islands do best: expect ocean-edge dinners, OUT OF THIS WORLD accommodation, scrumptious fine dining, pampering spas and personalized service in The Seychelles, Mauritius and The Maldives.
